Time and planning

How quickly can I get married?

If you have all the required documents ready, we can make your wedding application immediately.
When the application is submitted, The Agency of Family Law can issue an approval in as little as five working days.

Once approved, we can book your ceremony.

Just Married in Denmark have helped many couples marry in under ten days from application to ceremony. Please note this is a situation dependent on The Agency of Family Law office processing time.

How long do I need to be in Denmark before my wedding?

You only need to be in Denmark on the day of your wedding ceremony. There are no specific rules requiring you to arrive a certain number of days before or stay for a certain period after the ceremony. This flexibility makes it easier for international couples to plan their wedding without extended stays.

On the day of the ceremony

What is the wedding ceremony like?

A Danish city hall wedding ceremony is typically brief, lasting about ten minutes. The registrar will say a few words, possibly include a poem, and then the legal vows are exchanged (couples can write their own). Afterward, the marriage license is signed. The ceremony takes place in beautifully decorated rooms, making the experience intimate and special.

Can I change my name on my wedding day?

In Denmark, you can’t change your name on your wedding day unless you are Danish. However, once you return to your home country, changing your name and registering your marriage should be relatively simple. To ensure a smooth process, check with your local office of “Births, Deaths, and Marriages” or consult your embassy if you live abroad for specific instructions on how to update your name legally after the wedding.

Do we need witnesses for the wedding ceremony?

Yes, it is legally required to have two witnesses at your wedding ceremony in Denmark. These can be family members, friends, or individuals provided by the city hall. If you don’t have witnesses, most city halls will arrange them for weekday ceremonies at no extra cost. However, for weekend weddings, some city halls may ask you to bring your own witnesses.

Marriage certificates

When do we get our marriage certificate?

You will receive two copies of your marriage certificate right after the ceremony

A two-piece marriage certificate in five languages (English, German, Spanish, French, and Danish)

Is a Danish marriage recognized world wide?

Your international marriage certificates issued in Denmark are legally recognized worldwide. Read more about the Danish International Marriage Certificate and how to get one.

Do I need an apostille stamp on my certificate?

You may need an Apostille stamp on your marriage license for government and immigration purposes in some countries. The Apostille stamp is a verification of authenticity by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is likely to be required if you live in Germany or if you are NON-EU citizens.

When can I get the Apostille on the certificates?

If you wish to have them legalized with an Apostille, we usually have them back to you by courier within four to five days after we receive them.
