However, receiving your approval is only one part of the process. One challenge many couples don’t expect is finding an available wedding date at their preferred City Hall.

Finding a date can be difficult
The first step towards getting married in Denmark is obtaining approval from the Danish Agency of Family Law. Once your application has been approved, you are legally eligible to marry in Denmark.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that a wedding date is automatically reserved for you.
Most Danish City Halls will not allow couples to book a ceremony before the approval has been issued. This means that many couples are waiting for exactly the same thing. As soon as they receive their approval, they all begin contacting City Halls to secure an appointment.

Summer is the busiest period
Demand for wedding appointments varies significantly throughout the year.
The busiest period is typically from May to September, when thousands of international couples choose Denmark for their wedding. The pleasant weather, longer days, and holiday season make these months especially popular.
During this period, appointments can disappear very quickly, particularly in the most well-known locations such as Copenhagen City Hall, Frederiksberg City Hall and Ærø City Hall.
If you have your heart set on a summer wedding, it is worth preparing your documents well in advance and being ready to book your ceremony as soon as your approval is issued.
Popular City Halls fill up quickly
Some City Halls are significantly more popular than others.
Copenhagen City Hall, Frederiksberg City Hall, and Ærø are among the most requested locations by international couples. Their popularity means that available appointments are often booked almost immediately after they become available.
Competition is especially high for:
- Fridays
- Dates before or after public holidays
- Summer months
- Specific anniversary dates or memorable dates
If you are only willing to marry on one particular date or in one specific City Hall, you should expect limited availability.
Another important factor is that every City Hall has its own opening hours and wedding schedule.
Some City Halls perform wedding ceremonies several days each week and therefore have many available appointments. Others only perform ceremonies on selected days, meaning far fewer couples can be accommodated.
This is one of the reasons why availability differs so much across Denmark.

Being flexible can give you more options
If you want to highest priority, there is absolutely nothing wrong with waiting for the right appointment.
Many couples are happy to wait a little longer in order to marry in Copenhagen, Frederiksberg or Ærø.
