Wedding in Denmark for Non-EU Citizens

Get married in Denmark

If one or both of you are non-EU citizens, there are a few extra things to check before you can have your wedding in Denmark.

You will need a valid passport and, depending on your situation, you may also need to show a valid visa or residence permit. If either of you has been married before, additional documents may also be required.

The exact requirements depend on your individual situation. It is therefore a good idea to find out exactly which documents you need before submitting your application. Having everything ready from the start can help you avoid unnecessary questions and delays later in the process.

Can non-EU citizens marry in Denmark?

Yes. You do not need to be an EU citizen or live in Denmark to have your wedding here. Both partners can be non-EU citizens, or you can be a couple where one partner is an EU citizen and the other is not.

As a non-EU citizen, you will need a valid passport. Depending on your nationality and situation, you may also need a valid visa or residence permit showing that you are legally allowed to enter and stay in Denmark.

Other documents can be required depending on your circumstances. If you have previously been married, for example, you may need documentation showing that the previous marriage has legally ended. See our list of documents you may or may not need here

What is different for non-EU citizens?

One of the main differences between EU and non-EU citizens is how you document your identity and legal stay.

EU citizens can generally use a valid passport or EU ID card. Non-EU citizens need a valid passport and may also have to provide a visa or residence permit.

The exact requirements are different from couple to couple. Your nationality, where you currently live, whether you have been married before and other personal circumstances can influence which documents the Danish authorities request.

This is why it is a good idea to check your specific requirements before starting the application instead of working from a general document checklist. At Just Married in Denmark, we’ll help you with any of these issues.

What if one partner is an EU-citizen?

It is very common for international couples to have different citizenships. One partner might be an EU-citizen, while the other is American, British, Indian, Turkish or from another non-EU country. That is not a problem.

The EU partner can normally provide a passport or EU ID card, while the non-EU partner will need a valid passport and proof of their legal right to enter or stay in Denmark.

The application is then assessed based on your situation as a couple and the documents you provide.

Make your marriage certificate ready for use abroad

After your ceremony, you receive an international Danish marriage certificate. But depending on where you live and what you need the certificate for, there may be one more practical step.

An Apostille verifies the authenticity of your marriage certificate and may be required when presenting it to authorities abroad. This can be particularly relevant for non-EU citizens or when the certificate is needed for government or immigration purposes.

The requirements vary between countries, so it is always worth checking what applies in the country where you intend to use your marriage certificate.

We help you through the process as an non-EU citizen

The rules for non-EU citizens can seem complicated when you first start looking into them. In practice, much of it comes down to knowing which documents apply to your particular situation and preparing them correctly.

At Just Married in Denmark, we help you through the application process, check your documents and assist you with the practical arrangements for your ceremony. We can also help with the Apostille process if you need your marriage certificate legalized afterwards.

With the paperwork taken care of, you can spend less time worrying about requirements and more time looking forward to your wedding day.
